Sketchbook or Daybook 023

Some early doodles and sketches towards my Alaskan Western film idea "Frozen Tears" - character thumbnails, bits for an opening storyboard sequence which can be seen here, [link] but like I've said before... it's in the sketchbook where the hard work is done.

Over the last year or so of teaching I've been thinking about what informs my own creativity in order to feed this stuff on to my students...

One of the big conclusions was that without my sketchbooks I wouldn't know what to do...

They are the heart of my working life and repositories for all the mad thoughts that I have while not working.

I encourage all my students whether 3D designers, illustrators, games designers, fine artists, film-makers, graphic designers or fashion students to carry one with them...

Even the ones who aren't strong draughtsmen/women

I tend to call them "Day-books", so as not to frighten off the sketch-shy... but as the title suggests I insist that they are used every day...
