Okay, so in between all the other life/work bullshit, Ive been trying to improve my guitar playing... in particular recently (ie the last week) to learn a slide accompaniment for Big Bill Broonzys The Wrong Woman, as a friend who plays professionally wanted us to do it at last nights fortnightly Jam Night
It has been a fucker to learn as the old school Jazzy changes are
well a fucker
(for a novice like me anyway).
So I turn up last night with both my resonator and my electric and he says Screw Bill Broonzy, I loved that version of The Cuckoo you found on MySpace, lets do that instead
(heavy sigh)
Anyway we did it in front of a suitably drunken crowd. My resonator was amplified with a just a regular vocal mike on a stand and I found it pretty hard to hear where my slide was at (the monitors being way out in front), but apparently it sounded okay
We then did a Clapton song Id never heard of (again with the not really hearing, but like being a teenager again, just hoping my hands where in the right place - laughs).
After that we got the electric out and El played the rhythm and sang Cross Cut Saw (great track, though I'd never played along to that before either) while I got to ditch the slide and wail all over the top of it all and practice those double stops and slips Id seen another friend of mine using the other weekend
Anyway it all went okay I think, even garnering a few raised eyebrows of surprise along the way
I even had one of my Writers Group turn up to see it all and they were seemingly impressed.
Nothing much more to divulge really... Oh apart from I've got a ticket to see David "Honey-boy" Edwards at the Norwich Arts Centre on the 27th of this month...
David "Honey-boy" Edwards!!! This is a guy that played with Robert Johnson... yes, that Robert Johnson...
Anyway, 'til next time...
