Sketchbook or Daybook 006

Some thoughts on Thumbnails and their uses... Students always seem fearful of thumbnails, but my life seems to revolve around them, whether using them to express ideas rapidly or biting them in anticipation of that next idea...

Plus... Drawing conventions regarding schematics... It's IMPORTANT that we all understand each others drawings, when we send them back and forth as we invariably will. So why not stick to the established DRAWING CONVENTIONS if they work, which in this case they do.

Over the last year or so of teaching I've been thinking about what informs my own creativity in order to feed this stuff on to my students...

One of the big conclusions was that without my sketchbooks I wouldn't know what to do...

They are the heart of my working life and repositories for all the mad thoughts that I have while not working.

I encourage all my students whether 3D designers, illustrators, games designers, fine artists, film-makers, graphic designers or fashion students to carry one with them...

Even the ones who aren't strong draughtsmen/women

I tend to call them "Day-books", so as not to frighten off the sketch-shy... but as the title suggests I insist that they are used every day...
